Job Summary
Responsible for responding to emergency calls and providing basic life‑saving emergency medical care to sick or injured persons in pre‑hospital settings. The role includes assessing patients, determining appropriate care, administering treatment, and transporting patients to a hospital.
Essential Job Functions- Respond to emergency calls and perform basic life support emergency medical services.
- Operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and medical equipment, inspect equipment, and perform general maintenance to ensure compliance with safety and sanitary policies.
- Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and monitor the work environment to safeguard employees and others; report violations and take preventive measures.
- Monitor inventory levels of departmental supplies, check expiration dates, and initiate orders for new materials.
- Communicate with supervisors, peers, and other parties to coordinate activities, review status of work and patients, exchange information, and resolve problems.
- Engage in fire suppression and other emergency responses where life, property, or the environment is at risk.
- Provide patients with emergency care using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Document patient information while maintaining confidentiality.
- Provide information and education to the public on EMS, public safety, and related topics.
- Perform related duties as required.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT‑B) training, supplemented by at least 2 years of experience or training in the EMS field.
Special
Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check. Must hold and maintain the following certifications:
Virginia driver’s license, EMT‑B, Emergency Vehicles Operator Course (EVOC), Hazardous Materials Technician, Firefighter I & II, and CPR. Must complete Bloodborne Pathogen training, Personal Protective Equipment training, Respirator Protection training, and any occupational training as designated by the Director or required by law. Must pass an NFPA 1582 physical examination prior to employment and annually or as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of County, State, and Federal laws, regulations, and protocols for providing emergency medical services.
- Ability to operate various emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
- Capacity to perform under pressure in an emergency environment.
- Mathematical ability.
- Strong communication skills.
- Computer proficiency.
- Willingness to work overtime as required.
- Ability to coordinate and maintain effective relationships with other agencies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational records.
Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion. Tasks include frequent lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 125 pounds; walking, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling over terrain and buildings.
Work Environment: Duties performed during emergencies or training under extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke; exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, pollen, odor, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, noise, bright or dim light, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic agents.
