Job Summary
The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper function of equipment, and conditions maximizing patient safety.
QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
Licensure and Certification- Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code §54.1-2956.12.
- Must hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board‑approved pathway (military training, DOL‑registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
- Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
- Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
- Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Computer skills.
- Communication:
Collaborates with the leadership team to identify and resolve unit issues.- Keeps co‑workers and intra‑op staff informed of any updates/issues.
- Follows written instructions as needed.
- Technical
Competency:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served.- Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
- Assists with various types of surgical operations, providing technically skilled duties and serving as first assist.
- Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
Physical DemandsMedium to heavy physical demand: constant standing, frequent walking, bending/stooping. Requires proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
Other Responsibilities- May require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
- On‑call responsibilities as directed.
- Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.
