The Medical Assistant will provide clinical support, assist with administrative tasks, and offer general support under the supervision of a licensed practitioner or designee in accordance with UVA Health policies and procedures and competency requirements to promote patient health and wellness. The role involves providing services to all age populations with sensitivity to functional and developmental age considerations.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED Required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in a clinic setting preferred.
- Licensure: Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential, or completion of an approved medical‑assistant program. Must obtain certification within 6 months of hire through a recognized national professional association (e.g., AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NAHP, NHA).
- Additional Skills/Requirements: AHA Healthcare Provider BLS required. Ability to complete general and department‑specific skill validation and competency testing.
- Patient Care
- Records and relays patient information, symptoms, and concerns to the medical provider or registered nurse for triage and care planning.
- Completes standardized rooming and performs clinical intake, health data collection, and documentation.
- Performs tasks within scope of practice and documented competencies, as directed by a licensed practitioner or nurse.
- Implements age‑appropriate interventions based on patient needs as directed by the medical provider.
- Reinforces patient/family teaching plans based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient using approved educational materials or written instructions.
- Teamwork
- Organizes and prioritizes daily work assignments to support patient needs, the interdisciplinary team, and operational efficiency.
- Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care.
- Recognizes the importance of time‑sensitive issues.
- Technical Competence
- Provides clinical support under the supervision of a licensed practitioner.
- Documents and captures charges for clinical support services rendered within the patient visit.
- Performs administrative support responsibilities as directed by a Clinic Leader.
Medium to Heavy Physical Demand:
The job requires constant standing, frequent walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills are essential. Attention to detail and the ability to write legibly are required. The position may require lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 100 lbs.; for weights over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
