Job Description We are seeking a Senior Specialist, Manufacturing Engineer to join our dynamic team supporting missile solutions in Orange, VA. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in energetic machining operations, CNC programming, and machine shop process optimization and a proven ability to lead modernization projects, improve production line performance, and mentor junior engineers. Schedule is 4/10s. Up to 10% travel.
Possibility role can convert to direct hire. Responsibilities:
Apply machining and fabrication principles to support energetic and non-energetic manufacturing operations. Program and operate CNC equipment and drive Design for Machining (DFM) practices. Perform precision machining of energetic components and assemblies with strict safety compliance. Set up, operate, and optimize machine shop equipment including mills, lathes, and grinders. Lead and support energetic assembly, machining, and manufacturing operations per regulatory requirements.
Modernize and automate production facilities by evaluating and integrating new machining technologies and process equipment. Own established processes, drive root cause analysis, implement improvements, and ensure safety and quality conformance. Develop and maintain PFMEAs, MBOMs, PHAs, JSAs, and detailed work instructions and process sheets. Lead defect identification, investigations, and corrective actions to reduce Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ). Monitor and maintain Statistical Process Control (SPC) for process stability and capability.
Support tooling development, conduct design and safety reviews, and implement tooling into production. Mentor junior manufacturing engineers and provide technical guidance. Collaborate with quality, design engineering, operations, and program management to resolve manufacturing challenges. Travel up to 10% as required to support program needs. Required Skills &
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline with 6+ years of relevant engineering experience; or a graduate degree with 4+ years; or in lieu of a degree, 10+ years of relevant engineering experience. Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance. Proficiency in machining and fabrication practices and process improvement methods. Experience creating PFMEAs, JSAs, PHAs, MBOMs, and work instructions.
Preferred
Skills:
Hands-on experience with energetic materials machining and assembly operations. Strong CNC programming, setup, and operation in precision machining environments.
Experience with mills, lathes, grinders, and related tooling and fabrication equipment. Ability to interpret technical drawings, engineering specifications, and GD&T requirements. Record of leading manufacturing improvement projects with measurable results. Experience integrating automation in machining or manufacturing environments. Familiarity with DoD 4145 standards and energetic materials safety requirements. Structured root cause analysis skills (e.g., 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone). Strong communication skills for presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
