Grocery Manager – Union position, bonus eligible.
Exemplifies strong customer service in every aspect of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Grocery Department, including supervising and training personnel to achieve departmental and store sales and profit objectives. Provides feedback and recommendations on operational issues and personnel decisions to Store Director and Division management.
Responsibilities- Champion corporate and division customer service programs to exceed division customer service goals, instilling a culture of excellent customer service in the department and throughout the store.
- Responsible for total store operations and directing associates throughout the store, as well as department managers, in the absence of or as needed by the Store Director.
- Manage the Grocery Department: plan, organize, and direct day‑to‑day operations of the grocery department, including dairy and frozen food sections; conduct daily inspections; maintain stock conditions; ensure compliance with product quality, rotation, code‑date, cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security standards; control pricing and coupon/discount policies.
- Implement Company and Division operating and merchandising policies and practices; control merchandise shrink; supervise and participate in store inventory counts; establish and enforce operating procedures; implement emergency procedures for equipment or software failures.
- Order grocery products and maintain inventory levels; supervise processing of reclamation; maintain orderly, in‑stock conditions in back room, sales floor, and all grocery department areas.
- Supervise receiving, storing, stocking, pricing, and merchandising of all grocery products; utilize hand trucks, pallet jacks, and bailer as needed; account for merchandise and handle customer and vendor relations; engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques; monitor daily log sheet, purchase report, and sales vs. projected sales and labor.
- Prepare and display appropriate product signage.
- Under the Store Director’s supervision, direct the work of all grocery associates; schedule associates for adequate coverage; motivate, train, and participate in hiring; instruct associates on proper performance of duties and knowledge of company policies.
- Monitor associate performance and recommend personnel actions such as hiring, firing, layoffs, promotions, demotions, and discipline; build and maintain morale; resolve complaints and report actions to the Store Director; report potential serious policy violations; identify and train high‑potential associates.
- Understand the store and grocery department P&A and plan promotions; communicate sales goals and opportunities to associates.
- Handle incoming telephone calls and customer complaints; report appropriately to the Store Director.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning associates, store sales, and company information; maintain accurate department records.
- Perform all duties with honesty, integrity, and compliance with company policies.
- Attend required training and sales meetings.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to Store Director or District Manager and Division management on operational issues.
- Extensive retail background with prior management experience related to retail operations.
- Thorough understanding of company practices, policies, and procedures.
- Strong written and oral communication, leadership, interpersonal, and team‑player skills; ability to supervise employees; knowledge of employment laws, workplace policies, and state and federal regulations.
- Friendly, courteous, initiative‑driven, composure in dealing with customers, co‑workers, and vendors; ability to concentrate amid interruptions and complaints.
- Analytical ability to handle administrative details such as planning, reporting, scheduling, supervising, hiring and disciplinary actions; basic maths and weights and measures; knowledge of product variety, location, and perishability.
- Schedule flexibility: work at different times, weekends, and holidays with minimal supervision.
