Skilled Maintenance, Electrical Apprentice

Job Summary

Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of commercial electrical equipment, traffic signals, fire alarms, elevator calls; does related work as required. Work is performed from verbal instruction and written work orders.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintaining and repairing electric equipment; maintaining records and files; preparing reports;
  • Make repairs to facility systems; performs preventive maintenance; makes routine inspections of systems; assist in troubleshooting electrical and fire alarm systems;
  • Prioritize, schedule, and complete work orders; order maintenance parts; record the use of parts for inventory and budgetary purposes; reads drawings and blueprints;
  • Assist in diagnosing, repairing, replacing, adjusting, and monitoring electrical equipment/systems;
  • Assist in new installations (panels, tv, projectors, circuits, and fixtures);
  • Assist in maintaining, repairing, and installing a variety of electrical components including plugs, lights, electric motors, generators, parking lot lights, well and sewer pumps;
  • Program and repair school zoning signals;
  • Operate genie lift for high work;
  • Locate and mark county owned underground utilities;
  • Assist other trades as required;
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in on‑call or emergency situations;
  • Performs other assigned duties.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Journeyman’s card or license preferred;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology of the electrical trade to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the trade.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with all employees and the public.
  • Ability to communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and administration as a positive representative of the Culpeper County School system.
Special Requirements

Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Physical Demands

Work is typically performed requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; some heavy work requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing and visual acuity are required for normal spoken word levels and for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Environment

Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.

Evaluation

The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
