This posting is for an Engineer II position in the Division Design Construct Unit. The position will serve as the Assistant to the DDC Engineer and will be responsible for the production and review of roadway design plans, estimates, creation of contract documents, as well as the review of plans and other deliverables submitted by private engineering firms. Duties include the development of roadway designs for DDC projects (small TIP, intersection improvement.
spot safety, spot mobility, etc.) utilizing Bentley highway design software and work spaces (Micro Station, Geopak, Open Roads Designer [ORD], and Corridor Modeling). Design activities include but are not limited to horizontal and vertical alignment, intersection geometry, earthwork, corridor model and plan set production. The Assistant DDC Engineer shall incorporate drainage recommendations to the plan set, prepare traffic control, pavement marking, erosion control, and signing plans.
Coordinate plan reviews with Raleigh Units to ensure compliance with NCDOT standards and specifications. Prepare project scope, workday estimates, and coordinate negotiations with consultants. Conduct field inspections of ongoing and proposed projects. Coordinate with internal units, governmental agencies, private engineering firms, and public/private officials on assigned projects. Advise lower-level engineers, and other employees, in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach to their work responsibilities.
This position will also assist the DDC Engineer with scheduling assigned projects within the DDC Unit to ensure completion of plans according to the STIP and/or Division Let schedule.
Additional Expectations:
Possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering relating to the department's construction and maintenance methods. Possess working knowledge of transportation design and AASHTO guidelines. Must have working experience using NCDOT Standards and Specifications and Roadway Standard Drawings; ability to read and comprehend transportation data, plans, survey data and specifications. Prepare and administer contracts. Supervise and evaluate work performance of lower-level employees.
Withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing project inspection. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, business associates, and the general public. Promote safe working environment.

** Management prefers applicants with the following:
*** Experience with interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others.
* Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex project development based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance with engineering principles, standards, and design needs.
* Knowledge of time and budget management practices and requirements needed for development of multiple projects with minimal supervision.
* Experience Collaborating and coordinating with private engineering firms to include technical writing, public speaking and working with persons of various technical and nontechnical educational backgrounds.
* Knowledge of NCDOT design principles, AASTHO guidelines and all phases of preparation of NCDOT preliminary plans, right of way plans and construction plans.
