Position Summary

Teaches chemistry to students in a public secondary school. Instructs students using various teaching methods such as lecture and demonstration, using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations. Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school. Assigns lessons and corrects homework. Administers tests to evaluate students' progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.

Keeps attendance records. Maintains discipline in classroom. Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems. Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops. Performs related duties such as sponsoring activities or student organizations, assisting students in selecting course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.

Job Requirements
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated by the administration.
  • Plans a program of study specifically in Chemistry that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress records as required.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Keeps current with advances and technology in his/her field.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned by building administrator and/or superintendent.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
