Job Description

Teaches middle school subjects in public schools to students with neurological, mental, emotional, and/or behavior impairments. Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional material to meet individual needs of students, considering state and school requirements, and physical, emotional, and educational levels of development. Collaborates with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers and other professionals to develop individual educational plans. Instructs students in all academic subjects using special educational strategies and techniques to improve sensory motor and perceptional motor development, perception, memory, language, cognition, and social and emotional development.

Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement, conducts continuous assessment of the level of functioning, and gives continuous feedback. Works with parents to help them develop skills in supporting learning. May teach in a self‑contained classroom or in a resource room.

Job Requirements
  • RI Teacher Certification for All Grades Special Education – Severe Intellectual Disability Teacher.
  • Provides a basic core program for identified students consistent with state education requirements and the student’s IEP.
  • Develops and implements IEP goals and objectives based on evaluation results.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials appropriate for accomplishing stated objectives.
  • Assesses students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Assists administration in implementing policies governing student conduct and maintains order in the classroom.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments of teacher aides.
  • Provides social skills training to assist students in forming positive relationships.
  • Mainstreams students in subject areas where possible.
  • Provides instruction in all areas of student academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Administers and scores educational evaluations or reevaluations.
  • Completes appropriate special education records.
  • Consults with administrators, teachers and parents regarding progress and problems.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary and IEP meetings when scheduled.
  • Provides appropriate materials to enable the student to realize goals stated in the IEP.
  • May coordinate and supervise other special services provided to students.
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff regarding educational, social and adjustment problems.
  • Assists other staff in resolving unique educational, psychological and/or discipline needs.
  • Assists the student and/or parents in realistic assessment of abilities and in establishing goals.
  • Provides motivation to students with difficulty attending or engaging.
  • Participates in ongoing professional study related to education and psychology of disabled students.
  • Maintains accurate records for state reports.
  • Communicates with outside agencies providing services to students.
  • Participates in and conducts staff development activities.
  • Develops, monitors, and evaluates curriculum in an ongoing manner.
  • Recommends supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Assumes responsibility for yard duty and hall monitoring as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director and/or Building Principal.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
