The Sewa International Ameri Corps Atlanta Program is an ongoing program that places Ameri Corps members as tutors and Supplementary Intervention Specialists (SIS) for children, ages 5-18, in Sewa ASPIRE tutoring programs in multiple apartment complexes in the Dekalb and Fulton Counties. The objective of the program is to improve the student's ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak in English, along with tutoring assistance in STEM subjects.
The program is a unique combination of virtual and in-person connect program, where, during the week, the tutors teach the kids in online virtual classes and on Saturday they meet with the kids in person. The program aims to serve 240 students and have 120 students report increased academic performance each year. The program provides supplementary language intervention and tutoring of STEM subjects to improve academic performance for children.
The program targets students who are falling behind in school and need extra help to succeed. The Ameri Corps members provide individualized tutoring and support to the students, as well as work with the students' parents and teachers to develop and implement academic plans. In addition, the tutors also engage the kids in group activities, games, planning and cultural activities to help develop their interpersonal skills.
Sewa Ameri Corps Atlanta program started in 2022 and it is currently in its fifth year. 74% of the funding for the program comes from Ameri Corps and 26% of the funding comes from the public and corporate support. Sewa supplements this program by engaging summer interns, youth volunteers and organizing several events such as food drives and health camps for these communities.
