Systems Engineer
Senior Technical Standards Contributor And Participant
As a senior Technical Standards contributor and participant, you will work closely with internal and external partners to improve and evolve industry technical standards while representing Qualcomm as a delegate in standardization forums and industry organizations. Your responsibility will include understanding data center industry landscapes and domestic and international competitors' strength and weaknesses, working with internal partners to identify existing and emerging standards for Qualcomm to focus on, working with external partners in developing and promoting standards, helping formulate, maintain and execute on Qualcomm's strategy for data center standards, and working with attorneys to file patents that protect the novel IP aspects of any inventions.
The primary focus for this role is system-level standards for core data center and edge server infrastructure. This includes rack, chassis, and motherboard architecture, with an emphasis on mechanical design and system integration.
Technical Focus Areas:
- Data center and edge server system architecture
- Rack, chassis, and motherboard standards (mechanical and infrastructure design)
- Modular systems (e.g., PCIe add-in cards, MHS, and similar form factors)
- Platform compliance, modeling, and validation
- Accelerator integration within server platforms
- SoC/IP integration, memory technologies, and high-speed I/O interconnects
- Mechanical implications of high TDP CPUs/GPUs/AI accelerators and memory (HBM, DIMM density)
- Connector and retention design
- Signal integrity impacts of:
Board warpage, Connector placement, Cable routing / risers - Mechanical implications for air and liquid (DLC) power, chips and memory thermal needs
- Quick disconnect (MQD), blind mate electrical, liquid and modern interface design
Minimum Qualifications (per leveling description):
- Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in system design, validation, or related engineering roles
- 2+ years of experience participating in technical standards bodies or industry organizations
- Demonstrated ability to influence across teams and organizations
- Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in system design, modeling, validation, or test
- 4+ years of active participation in standards organizations (e.g., OCP, JEDEC, PCI-SIG, IEEE, Linux Foundation or similar)
- 2+ years of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership
- 3+ years in a technical leadership role
- Deep understanding of data center ecosystems, including enterprise, HPC, and hyperscale environments
- Authored or co-authored specifications in OCP, EIA, IEC, or similar
- Has implemented or influenced deployable OCP-compliant platforms
- Experience designing and developing server or edge platforms across full lifecycle (architecture, design, implementation, verification, validation, through manufacturing and silicon qualification)
- Knowledge of global data center market dynamics and competitive landscape
- Strong expertise in mechanical and infrastructure design for server systems
- Background in technical leadership roles with demonstrated impact
- Familiarity with Qualcomm technologies and semiconductor platforms (preferred)
- Established network within industry, standards bodies, or academia (preferred)
- Excellent written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
- Willingness to travel as required
