Position InformationThe purpose of this classification is to perform technical work involving installation, configuration, maintenance, and user support for networked computer hardware/software and related components. This classification is the first tier in the LAN Support series.
Essential Functions- Assisting with monitoring the primary helpdesk phone, providing support for end users, managing level 1 helpdesk requests using the county helpdesk system, including password resets, authentication issues, Microsoft Office issues, internet browser issues, and general computer questions. Ensuring tickets are routed and assigned to appropriate staff based on department routing protocols.
- Assisting senior technicians in the installation and configuration of county computer systems, peripherals, smartphones, tablets, and software; connecting county managed computer hardware to LAN/WAN networking components, including routers and switches; configuring network software components for LAN/WAN connectivity; monitoring network resources and usage; researching, installing, and supporting user‑specific software; performing system upgrades of hardware and software; downloading software updates and device drivers;
modifying or maintaining software applications; installing data jacks and network cabling to ensure LAN/WAN connectivity; removing or replacing hardware components such as processors, memory modules, video cards, sound cards, network cards, motherboards, or hard drives. - Assisting senior technicians in establishing, implementing, and maintaining system security measures; ensuring integrity of system data; establishing security access to various computer systems or programs for authorized users; changing passwords and/or removing user accessibility as appropriate.
- Assisting senior technicians in monitoring working conditions of equipment and performing general/preventive maintenance tasks such as clearing paper jams and cleaning equipment.
- Ensuring end‑user computers remain up to date with the latest security and critical updates for installed operating systems, antivirus applications, or any other security platforms deployed.
- Communicating with hardware/software vendors, service representatives, and technical support representatives as appropriate; providing information concerning operational and/or mechanical problems.
- Assisting senior technicians and IT management in identifying new processes and alternatives to resolve problems or improve/enhance operations; evaluating performance of systems and programming to meet growing needs.
- Researching error messages for troubleshooting of systems and applications via website knowledge bases.
- Assisting management in reviewing product specifications and making recommendations regarding computer, hardware, and software purchases and usage based on operational and intended use when required.
- Maintaining current inventory records of all computer hardware, software, and related components; conducting periodic inventory counts; coordinating receipt of incoming materials, unpacking/verification of materials, and delivery of equipment to appropriate location.
- Assisting senior technical staff and management in county IT retired computer surplus.
- Maintaining logs/documentation with the county helpdesk system of work activities, time tracking, computer operations, system modifications, maintenance activities, installations, and other activities; documenting status of repairs in the county helpdesk system and updating when required for accurate reporting.
- Assisting senior technical staff in monitoring various statistical data; making applicable calculations; analyzing data and identifying trends; summarizing data and assisting in preparing reports.
