Cleaning Services, Facility Maintenance
The purpose of this classification is to perform routine custodial duties to ensure Forsyth County buildings and facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained. This position supports the Facilities Management Department by providing sanitation and basic maintenance services in public and administrative buildings.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Clean and sanitize restrooms, break rooms, offices, lobbies, hallways, and other public areas using appropriate cleaning agents and equipment.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors; dust and wipe down surfaces, including desks, counters, fixtures, and baseboards.
Clean windows, glass doors, mirrors, blinds, and high-touch surfaces to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
Remove cobwebs and spot‑clean walls, doors, and partitions as needed.
Empty trash and recycling bins throughout the facility, replace liners, and ensure proper disposal of waste in designated areas.
Monitor and maintain cleanliness of outdoor areas, including entrances, walkways, and parking lots by picking up litter and debris.
Replenish supplies such as soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other consumables in restrooms and common areas.
Track inventory of cleaning products and supplies and notify supervisor when stock is low or equipment requires maintenance.
Perform minor custodial maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, batteries, and air fresheners.
Report building maintenance needs, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions to supervisor for timely resolution.
Assist with event setup and breakdown, including moving and arranging furniture, tables, chairs, and equipment.
Support special projects, seasonal cleaning, and deep‑cleaning initiatives as directed.
Follow all safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Secure buildings after hours by locking doors and windows, setting alarms, and ensuring all areas are properly closed.
Respond to emergencies, spills, or incidents promptly and report them according to established protocols.
Collaborate with other custodial staff and departments to ensure high standards of cleanliness and facility readiness.
Participate in required training and maintain awareness of updated cleaning procedures and safety regulations.
One year of custodial or janitorial experience in a commercial or public facility is also preferred. The custodian must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks. Additionally, the custodian must pass a background check and drug screening. If assigned to Facilities Management, the custodian must be able to successfully complete a criminal justice background check through the Sheriff’s Office.
A high school diploma or GED is preferred for this position.
