Perform mechanical repair work and preventative maintenance on automobiles, trucks, light/heavy equipment, small engines, or other automotive/mechanical equipment.

Inspect, test, and diagnose problems involving various systems of vehicles or equipment such as gasoline/diesel engines, ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, transmissions, differentials, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, pneumatic systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel and air induction systems, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, windows, lighting systems, or horns.

Examine vehicles to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; conduct diagnostic computer testing; consult with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or prevent future problems; assess body damage to vehicles; determine parts/supplies necessary to conduct repairs.

Assist with and/or perform appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components; remove or replace brakes, brake pads, wheels, steering components, shocks, transmissions, cylinder heads, valve trains, differentials, suspension springs, starters, alternators, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, flywheels, fuel injectors, and other components; turn, replace, or resurface rotors/drums; replace rings, bearings, and universal joints; repair/replace clutches; rebuild generators and carburetors;

reline brakes; remove or replace engines, engine parts, and engine gaskets; check engine timing and performance; grind valves; rebuild wheel cylinders; replace disk calipers; repair truck frame and dump beds; install, remove, repair or replace doors, lifts, seats, radios, lights, windows, mirrors, or emergency sirens.

Perform general welding work; repair broken/cracked parts, cut metal, and weld metal components; fill holes and remove minor dents.

Perform routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; pump fuel into vehicles; check fluid levels and replace fluids as needed; drain/replace oil; change/replace filters and batteries; remove/replace belts, hoses, fuses, bulbs, and other parts; flush radiators and coolant systems; replace spark plugs and wires; lubricate mechanical parts and grease equipment; check air pressure level of tires; patch holes/punctures in tires;

repair/replace damaged tires; rotate and balance tires.

This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.

Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, and equipment/vehicle operation; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, mechanical/engine diagnosis and repair, and transmission and brake repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment a valid ASE Technician Certification in Brakes. Recovery and recycling of refrigerant requires Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery Certification.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Operation of heavy equipment requires possession and maintenance of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
