Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Attends sick calls, prepares examining rooms and equipment, and operates pill call.

Dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries. Refers inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as needed. Performs emergency procedures and notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.

Provides guidance and supervision to nursing care provided by non-licensed medical staff. Maintains good working relationships with facility staff and healthcare providers. Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision-making, using sound independent judgment. Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of services. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all services are documented.

Monitors potential catastrophic illnesses closely. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary. Complies with applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observes and records inmate/resident behavior. Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband. Provides health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as required. Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of operational records, reports, and logs.

Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures. Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of approved medical services. Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. Takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
