Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Mortgage Underwriter to join our lending team. The Mortgage Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating mortgage loan applications, verifying financials and making credit decisions aligning to company, investors and regulatory. This role requires strong judgment, risk assessment skills, and the ability to make & communicate sound lending decisions in a timely manner.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite Non-QM and Agency loans, ensuring loans are compliant with company and investor guidelines and meet established loan policies, secondary market investor standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage individual pipeline daily and maintain high productivity by completing new underwriting reviews, condition reviews, and other underwriting tasks within established turn times
- Review and analyze borrower application, credit reports, title reports, income documentation and assets, appraisals, and complex business returns and financials to ensure creditworthiness.
- Verify the accuracy and integrity of documentation to prevent fraud
- Communicate clearly and work collaboratively with Account Managers, Processor, Sales, and Closing to provide updates, clarification on outstanding conditions and deficiencies identified on loans, and to assist in interpreting underwriting guidelines
- Conduct an appraisal analysis to determine whether acceptable collateral standards are met.
- Keep up to date with all guideline changes and system enhancements.
- Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, or a related field (preferred).
- 2+ years of mortgage underwriting experience (non-QM, conventional, FHA, VA, or USDA).
- DE/SAR/LAPP certifications (preferred, if applicable).
- Strong knowledge of mortgage lending guidelines, federal & state regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple files and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also being a strong team player willing to provide support when needed.
- Proficiency in loan origination systems (LOS) - Byte Pro preferred and automated underwriting systems (AUS) such as DU/LP.
