Position Summary:

The clinical supervisor is the front-line supervisor responsible for coordinating operations of the patient care department during their assigned shift. The supervisor coordinates care for individual patients and leads the delivery of care for multiple patients in the nursing care area, following policies, procedures, standards, and standard work. Responsibilities include coordinating, directing, and monitoring unit operations with a focus on patient flow, staff scheduling, department budget, and unit supplies.

The supervisor participates in evaluation and staff development and collaborates with other disciplines to ensure safe, effective, patient-centered care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
  • Utilizes the nursing process, evidence-based practice, policies and procedures and practice standards as a framework for the management of unit operations.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership in high-stress situations.
  • Models an interdisciplinary approach and collaborates with healthcare team members to achieve optimal operational efficiency.
  • Promotes the advancement of the profession of nursing (e.g. certification, advancement of education, Nurse Leadership Academy).
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership in the coordination and collaboration of patient-centered care across the healthcare continuum.
  • Creates a supportive, healthy, positive work environment through clinical and administrative leadership and expertise.
  • Fosters employee engagement and leads by example, thus inspiring loyalty.
  • Embraces the Lean mindset and utilizes the plan-do-study-act (PDSA) performance improvement model.
  • Participates in a shared-governance teams/councils/committees for improvement of unit/system operations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conduct crucial conversations when coaching employees to foster clinical improvement through effective feedback.
  • Fosters a culture of safety by assessing and applying appropriate interventions and evaluating the effectiveness of those outcomes.
  • Promotes an environment that supports and enhances the Patient and Family Experience.
  • Ensures accountability to achieve financial targets through daily management of personnel in accordance with patient census and other variables.
  • Promotes and participates in activities designed to support organizational excellence and growth, such as Magnet initiatives and Lean processes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach, mentor, coach, delegate and supervise healthcare team members in the performance of nursing procedures and processes with a focus on safety and competence.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial and other sensitive material in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and or employees.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements

    • 2+ years acute care experience in Telemetry.
    • Computer, internet, order entry and word processing experience preferred.
    • Supervisory experience preferred.

    Education/Licensure/Certification

    • Current California RN License required.
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required (RN, Supervisors hired before 2013 do not require a degree).
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Card.
    • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Card preferred.
