Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or 60 or more credit hours from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Associate's degree related to interpreting or in the field of Deafness preferred.
  • Passed the BEI Test of English Proficiency.
  • Ability to establish and maintain conversations using sign language with students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  • Conceptual knowledge of signs related to the educational setting.
  • Experience working with children.
Terms of Employment

Salary / Paygrade

$33,173 – IP 7

Additional stipend based upon level of certification:

  • Level I or Basic – $2,500
  • Level II, CI/CT, SC, IC/TC, NIC – $3,500
  • Level III or Advanced (BEI or NIC) – $4,500

Salary Range (based on experience) as set by the Board of Trustees for the school year.

Salary listed includes compensation for 15-minute extension of workday.

Essential Functions
  • Seek out and participate in a minimum of six hours per semester of approved staff development targeted at assisting individuals in passing the BEI interpreter certification test. A minimum of four hours must be in district staff development.
  • Participate in observations at least once a month by a certified teacher of the deaf, certified interpreter, and/or deaf education administration for feedback and recommendations to improve sign language proficiency.
  • Attempt the Receptive/Expressive Interpreter Certification Test at least once between August 15 and April 1 of the current school year. Results must be provided to the Interpreter Coordinator within 30 days of receipt of testing results.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, including student confidentiality.
  • Interact in a professional manner with administrators, teachers, staff, students, visitors or individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting.
  • Demonstrate understanding of assignment qualifications.
  • Provide in-class signed and/or oral support according to the specifications of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Become and remain well-versed in course material in order to demonstrate competency in the in-class support process.
  • Assist with any and all duties related to the deaf education setting or in the mainstream setting as requested by educational staff.
  • Assist in providing general supervision of students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (i.e., playground, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, escorting students during transition periods, toileting).
  • Be informed, monitor and report to the deaf education case manager or cooperating teacher when concerns arise about the student's individual needs or modifications and/or modifications as approved by the Individualized Education Program committee (IEP).
  • Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Specialist, and/or Coordinator for the NWHCCD or as determined by the specific area of assignment.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.
Working Conditions

Repetitive hand motion. Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional stooping, bending, and moderate lifting (15-44 pounds). Exposure to extreme heat and humidity.
