Salary: $160K - $175K
Our client is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join their team in either the Houston, TX or Chicago, IL office. The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for leading the civil site design, land development engineering, and construction oversight for mission-critical hyperscale and enterprise data center campuses ranging from 10-500+ MW capacity. This position requires extensive experience in large-scale site development, stormwater management, grading and earthwork design, utility infrastructure, and permitting for data center facilities designed to Uptime Institute Tier III/IV standards.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead civil site design for data center campus developments including site grading, earthwork balancing, erosion and sediment control, and pad preparation for multi-building hyperscale campuses
- Design stormwater management systems including detention/retention basins, underground storage, bioswales, permeable pavement, and compliance with MS4 permits, state NPDES requirements, and local watershed regulations
- Develop utility infrastructure layouts including domestic water, fire water supply, sanitary sewer, natural gas service, and telecommunications duct bank routing to support phased data center buildouts
- Prepare horizontal and vertical control plans, paving and grading plans, utility plans, and construction sequencing for sites ranging from 20 to 500+ acres
- Coordinate with geotechnical engineers on subsurface conditions, bearing capacity, settlement analysis, and ground improvement recommendations for high-load data center foundations
- Manage jurisdictional permitting processes including site plan approvals, stormwater permits, wetland delineations, floodplain analysis, FEMA CLOMR/LOMR applications, and environmental compliance documentation
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analysis using HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Storm
CAD, or equivalent software to size conveyance systems, culverts, and outfall structures - Design roadway infrastructure including access roads, truck courts, fire apparatus access lanes, security perimeter roads, and ADA-compliant pedestrian routes for large-scale data center campuses
- Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and structural disciplines on underground routing conflicts, equipment pad elevations, pipe penetrations, and site logistics planning
- Oversee civil construction administration including submittal reviews, RFI responses, site observations, materials testing coordination, and substantial/final completion inspections
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including ADA, IBC site provisions, local zoning ordinances, and applicable environmental regulations
- Mentor junior civil engineers and drafters while maintaining technical quality control on all civil design deliverables.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- 7+ years of civil engineering experience with minimum 2-5 years focused on large-scale commercial, industrial, data centers, mission-critical site development, or Power Production
- Demonstrated experience with data center campus site design, phased infrastructure development, and high-load pavement design
- Proficiency in civil design software (AutoCAD Civil 3D, Micro Station Open Site, Storm
CAD, HEC-HMS/RAS, or equivalent) - Strong understanding of ASCE 7, IBC site provisions, ADA accessibility requirements, and local/state stormwater regulations
- Experience managing projects exceeding $50M in site construction value
- Excellent communication skills for client interaction, contractor coordination, and interdisciplinary design team leadership
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline
- CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager), CPESC (Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control), LEED AP, or Envision SP certifications
- Experience with hyperscale (100MW+) data center campus developments and understanding of hyperscale operator site requirements
- Knowledge of sustainable site design practices including green infrastructure, low-impact development (LID), and water reuse/recycling systems
- Familiarity with FAA obstruction evaluations, environmental site assessments (Phase I/II ESA), and brownfield redevelopment
- Experience with mass grading operations exceeding 1 million cubic yards of earthwork
- Government/DOD facility site development experience with security clearance
- Technical Competencies
- Large-scale site grading and earthwork balancing for multi-phase data center campuses
