Pharmacy Administrative Specialist

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital. The Pharmacy Administrative Specialist is an advanced pharmacist practitioner responsible for coordinating pharmaceutical care through medication use evaluations, drug policy development, and continuous quality management activities to improve operational efficiency and patient safety.

Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of an approved education program for the required credential(s).
  • Advanced degree (master’s or Pharm.D) preferred.
Experience
  • Completed an ASHP‑accredited post‑graduate year one (PGY1) and year two (PGY2) residency or equivalent professional experience.
  • Six years of pharmacist experience in a hospital or specialty pharmacy setting, or five years for a current Houston Methodist employee with demonstrated leadership abilities.
Licenses and Certifications Required
  • PHRM – Pharmacist state licensure, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation PSV within 90 days.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) within 90 days.
  • PPC – Pharmacist Preceptor Certification, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation PSV within 90 days.
Preferred
  • IV Certification – Intravenous certification (various).
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Proficient in evaluating drug use, patient safety, and quality improvement.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and team leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive pharmacy services including unit‑dose distribution, IV admixture, nutrition support, and target drug monitoring.
  • Proficient in medical information systems and EMR software.
  • Advanced skills in spreadsheets and database software for data analysis.
  • Presentation and facilitation abilities for work teams.
  • Highly organized, multitasking, and problem‑solving aptitude.
Essential Functions People
  • Promotes a positive, collaborative work environment and leads the team toward optimal results.
  • Develops educational materials and conducts educational programs for pharmacy staff and other personnel.
  • Communicates regularly on personnel issues, quality initiatives, and regulatory compliance with the pharmacy management team.
Service
  • Manages workload fluctuations, oversees staffing assignments, and ensures accurate medication delivery.
  • Functions as a unit‑based pharmacist, providing patient care decisions such as order verification, problem resolution, and medication counseling.
  • Serves as liaison between departments to support pharmacy goals and quality initiatives.
Quality/Safety
  • Coordinates department reporting, collects and analyzes statistical data, and monitors quality improvement.
  • Participates in quality management activities and applies methodologies such as Six Sigma and Lean.
  • Reviews and updates policies and procedures.
Finance
  • Contributes to the annual budget for the specialty focus area and assists in selecting cost‑effective therapy regimens.
  • Identifies cost‑saving opportunities and manages inventory to minimize waste.
  • Manages time effectively and prioritizes tasks for support staff.
Growth/Innovation
  • Plans, develops, implements, and monitors new pharmacy programs addressing safety, finance, and operations.
  • Contributes to intra‑ and interdepartmental activities, publishes professional work, and presents at conferences.
  • Leads technology assessment and implementation of automated systems.
