Position Summary
The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership role designed to prepare associates for potential Store Manager opportunities within Walmart US store operations. The assignment is expected to last no longer than 12 to 18 months. Associates in this role are expected to maintain mobility within their assigned region for Store Manager application and potential placement. The ESM role trains and develops associates in merchandising, people leadership, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement, preparing them for a Store Manager position.
ResponsibilitiesTrain and develop associates in store operations across merchandising strategy, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. Assist in managing the store's financial performance, authorize and manage expenditures against budget, monitor sales and profit goals, and analyze economic trends and community needs for budget forecasting. Generate, review, and act on business reports and profit‑and‑loss statements. Support sales by ensuring effective merchandise presentation, accurate pricing, proper signing, and appropriate inventory levels.
Model, enforce, and provide direction to hourly associates on customer service approaches and complaint resolution within company guidelines. Assist with projected staffing plans and support the implementation of talent pipelines and succession planning processes. Initiate, direct, and participate in community outreach programs and promote company-sponsored programs and sustainability efforts. Handle the Open Door Policy by meeting with associates, researching issues, reviewing policies, and providing resolutions.
Support the store management team by establishing objectives, communicating goals, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and identifying training needs. Ensure compliance with company policies by holding associates accountable. Implement and monitor asset protection and safety controls, maintain quality assurance standards, and oversee safety and operational reviews. Develop and implement action plans to correct deficiencies. Facilitate strong partnerships with key stakeholders across the organization, including Market Managers, Regional leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, and Asset Protection.
Demonstrate adaptability, continuous learning, and the ability to remove barriers that impact performance.
- Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, retail management, or financial management plus two years of experience in a management role within a retail, operations, or distribution environment, with responsibility for supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors, managing workloads, and participating in the hiring and promotion of employees.
- Four years of experience in a management role within a retail, operations, or distribution environment, with responsibility for supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors, managing workloads, and participating in the hiring and promotion of employees.
- Two years of general management experience, including responsibility for financial accountability.
- Successful completion of a firearms‑specific Criminal Background Check (CBC) and Firearms Authorized Training for facilities that sell firearms; successful completion of a state‑issued Certificate of Eligibility for facilities that sell ammunition and have state‑specific requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, retail management, or financial management plus three years of management experience with financial accountability in a retail or multi‑unit environment.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to relocate within the assigned region for Store Manager placement.
- Experience as a Walmart Assistant Manager, Coach, or Store Lead with demonstrated readiness for increased scope and responsibility.
- Experience running a fresh, dry grocery, or general merchandise area.
