At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records.

The RN II provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently, which may include patients with varied and complex needs. This position communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.

This position assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain high-quality care and desired treatment outcomes.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in care delivery, technology use, medication administration, procedures and emergency management.
  • Act as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
  • Assume leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section
Experience
  • Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment
Licenses and Certifications
  • Required
    • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
    • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
    • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
  • Preferred
    • Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification
    • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) if Pediatric care
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates the skills to safely perform the assigned job, based on ongoing skills, competency assessments, and annual departmental competency checklists.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially where safety or security is involved.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, families, and co-workers with a customer service focus and positive language.
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment with physicians, the interprofessional care team and patients/families.
  • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time management and professional contributions per Clinical Career Path program guide.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.
