Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The position communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and desired treatment outcomes.

The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. The RN II assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s).
  • Experience
    :
    Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Licenses and Certifications (Required)
    • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing, PSV Compact Licensure – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) and BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • Licenses and Certifications (Preferred)
    • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification
    • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
    • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English for essential functions.
    • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.

    • Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with the care team and patients.
    • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously under the Nurse Practice Act.

    • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.
Essential Functions

    • Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team.
    • Contributes to teamwork by being aware of overall unit acuity and offering assistance.
    • Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors staff and students.
  • Service Essential Functions
    • Follows patient and family-centered care standards, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records.
    • Develops, updates, and communicates care plans, including discharge, in partnership with patients, family, and the healthcare team.
    • Provides patient teaching tailored to learning needs, evaluates comprehension, and adapts teaching methods.
    • Drives improvement of department patient satisfaction scores through accountability to service standards.
  • Quality/Safety Essential Functions
    • Follows standards of care related to the nursing process.
    • Follows regulatory and professional practice standards, identifies areas of improvement with evidence-based research.
    • Provides and modifies care for complex patients and coordinates care with the interprofessional team with accurate documentation.
    • Improves unit-based quality and safety scores through accountability and collaboration.
  • Finance Essential Functions
    • Manages time effectively, documents care timely, and minimizes overtime.
    • Provides input into unit resource utilization and budget needs.
    • Contributes to meeting department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency.

    • Identifies and presents innovation, efficiency, and improvement opportunities using evidence-based practice.
    • Champions new care pathways or service line implementations to improve service to the community.
