Position: RN II - AOD (Part Time- Weekends)

Job Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently – including patients with varied and complex needs – and communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and desired treatment outcomes.

The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, and acting as patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. The RN II assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital‑wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s).
  • Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
Licenses and Certifications – Required
  • Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure (PSV Compact). Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days of establishing residency.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Instructor (AHA) within 4 months.
Licenses and Certifications – Preferred
  • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Instructor (AHA) if providing pediatric care within 4 months.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, assessed through ongoing competency checks.
  • Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing) necessary for essential functions.
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians and the interprofessional team.
  • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills.
  • Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and related products.
Essential Functions People
  • Uses therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
  • Contributes to teamwork by awareness of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests.
  • Implements staff education for patient populations and unit processes; mentors staff and students and engages in preceptorship.
Service
  • Follows patient‑ and family‑centered care standards.
  • Conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records.
  • Develops, updates, and communicates care plans, including discharge planning.
  • Advocates for patients and families to resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Provides patient teaching and evaluates comprehension.
  • Helps drive improvement of patient satisfaction scores through peer‑to‑peer accountability.
Quality & Safety
  • Adheres to standards of care as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
  • Identifies practice improvement areas and implements evidence‑based solutions.
  • Provides and modifies care for complex patients and coordinates with the interprofessional team with accurate documentation.
  • Improves quality and safety scores on the unit‑based scorecard.
Finance
  • Manages time effectively to minimize overtime and meet daily priorities.
  • Contributes to unit resource utilization and financial targets on the scorecard.
Growth & Innovation
  • Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement based on evidence‑based practice literature.
  • Champions new care pathways or service line implementation to improve service.
  • Researches changes and presents options to shared governance and leadership.
