Overview

CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The day includes helping children develop social skills, make healthy choices, build self‑help and school readiness skills, and explore the environment around them.

Responsibilities

Curriculum: Develop schedules and activity plans, review and provide input into plans, incorporate observed needs, implement activities and special events, prepare and implement program options for children with special requirements, demonstrate and facilitate planned activities, model safety, fitness, health, nutrition, and arrange appropriate snacks.

Indoor and Outdoor Environment: Prepare, arrange and maintain activity areas and materials, set up displays, inventory equipment, secure supplies.

Interactions and Relationships: Establish program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions; interact with children using approved child guidance techniques.

Supervision of Children and Youth: Provide care and supervision, maintain control and safety of children, supervise activities, ensure departure with authorized person, observe for signs of illness or abuse and report as directed, mandatory reporter.

Parent and Employee Communication: Interact professionally with employees, parents and command personnel; provide feedback; participate in conferences.

Assessment: Observe children and document developmental progression; participate in program evaluation using rating scales and risk assessment tools.

Compliance: Assist in achieving DoD certification and national accreditation; ensure compliance with laws and policies; notify supervisor of concerns.

Additional Responsibilities: Collect, maintain, and report program participation data; perform other related duties.

Qualifications

Entry Level (CY-1702-01):

  • Communicate effectively in English orally and in writing.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Complete DoN training within specified timeframe.
  • Promote effective working relationships.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member.

Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01):

  • All Entry Level skills.
  • Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices.
  • Interpret curriculum or activity plan.
  • Plan and organize.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Six months of experience working with children or youth.

Target Level (CY-1702-02):

  • All Entry and Intermediate skills.
  • Knowledge of child and youth development principles.
  • Skill to implement principles and practices.
  • Skill to promote effective working relationships.

    Skill to work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Skill in verbal communication to provide program information.
  • One year of experience.
Education
  • High school diploma, GED, or college transcripts.
  • Entry level: at least 18 years, high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Intermediate level: same plus six months experience and completion of Navy Entry Level training or equivalent.
  • Target level: same plus one year experience and either completion of DoD standardized training courses, a valid CDA/MSA credential, or a minimum of a 2‑year degree in a relevant field.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications required by federal, state, or national institutions.
  • Pass all applicable records and background checks, including fingerprint, Tier 1 child care check, SCHR, IRC, SARP, FAP, NJIS.
  • Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; positive results lead to removal or ineligibility.
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, be free of communicable diseases.
  • Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at application.
  • Must be U.S. citizen or 3 years lawful residency.
  • Must comply with REAL  other access requirements.
