Job Description

Applied Technical Systems (ATS) is seeking a motivated, results-driven Software Application Developer to support the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division. The selected candidate will provide software development expertise supporting the MADIS Virtual Trainer (MVT), an evolving simulation and training environment. The position will primarily use C#, Python, and the Unity Engine and will work within an Agile development framework alongside a collaborative team of software and systems engineering professionals.

This is an excellent opportunity for a developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working directly with customers, and contributing to mission-focused software and simulation solutions.

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Backlog Grooming, Sprint Retrospectives, and Sprint Reviews.
  • Analyze requirements and translate them into actionable development tasks and user stories. Create, decompose, estimate, and prioritize user stories supporting MVT development.
  • Design, develop, enhance, integrate, and maintain software applications using C# and Unity.
  • Develop, peer-review, test, and deliver software capabilities within established sprint commitments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software and engineering issues.
  • Support system integration, developmental testing, Verification and Validation (V&V), and software maintenance activities.
  • Develop and maintain technical and software documentation.
  • Support test systems and simulation-supported training systems.
  • Work with both Government Off-the-Shelf (GOTS) and Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) hardware and software technologies.
  • Brief and demonstrate software capabilities and completed work to Government sponsors and stakeholders as required.
  • Collaborate with other developers, engineers, Government stakeholders, and project team members to ensure successful delivery of mission requirements.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline from an accredited institution; or 5–10 years of relevant, demonstrated experience supporting combat systems, Command and Control (C2) systems, and simulation/stimulation systems related to Surface Ship Undersea Warfare (USW) for U.S. and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) platforms.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional software or systems engineering experience with the Unity framework and/or game development.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience developing in C#.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex engineering challenges in Unity-based applications.
  • Experience developing and enhancing hardware and software systems, including system integration, developmental testing, V&V, maintenance, documentation, and test systems.
  • Experience with GOTS and COTS hardware and software technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience working within Agile software development methodologies and life cycles.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site at NSWC Dahlgren, VA. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing simulation, training, or virtual training applications.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or U.S. Navy programs.
  • Experience with Python in addition to C#.
  • Experience working with combat systems, Command and Control (C2), or Surface Warfare/Undersea Warfare applications.
  • Experience working directly with Government customers and technical stakeholders.
