Job Summary
The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a student worker as a Lab Assistant in the Ecological Protection Lab. This position reports to the Lab Coordinator and is based around the rearing, release, and recovery of predatory beetles to combat the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). The Ecological Protection Lab is a program of the Environmental Leadership Center, which supports service, research, and teaching activities that promote leadership and stewardship in preserving and enhancing the environment.
Responsibilities- Preparing oviposition jars
- Regular interaction with HWA infested hemlock twigs
- General cleaning of rearing instruments used in the lab
- Promoting safety in the laboratory and in the field
- Maintaining the laboratory
- Maintaining and collecting foliage that is used for food
- Performing egg counts for production analysis of predatory beetles
- Beetle recovery from in sectaries
- Tree health assessments
- Promotion of other ELC projects and activities
- Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain, varying temperatures, and around common allergens.
- Proficiency in public speaking and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of basic biology lab equipment and instruments.
- Competency in basic gardening equipment
- Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker
- Prior experience as a laboratory assistant is a plus but not required.
- Preference will be given to biology majors with an interest in entomology and environmental studies.
