Reporter, Defense (Business & Capital

The big picture:

We are hiring a reporter to be our subject matter expert on the businesses and money transforming the defense industry.

Defense is no longer just the domain of government contractors. Venture capital is pouring billions into defense startups, AI and autonomy are reshaping procurement priorities, and a new generation of companies is challenging the industry's traditional giants.

In this role you will make an impact through the following responsibilities:

• Contribute to a bi-weekly newsletter exploring the biggest trends and news shaping the business of defense.
• Break news on venture capital, startups, mergers and acquisitions, public companies, defense procurement and the financial forces reshaping the industry.
• Help Axios readers understand how Pentagon priorities, procurement shifts and industrial policy influence investments and corporate strategy.
• Become our public authority on stage and elsewhere to help illuminate these important issues.

• A commitment to building and nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment.
• A belief in Smart Brevity as the core writing style of Axios.
• Reporting experience in a fast-paced news environment.
• Demonstrated experience landing big scoops and conceptualizing big ideas.
• Strong writing skills for online and newsletters.
• Ability to command a stage and live interview.
• Experience working across teams to produce quality content.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $100,000 - $150,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
