Job SummaryThe HVAC & Plumbing Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning projects. This role involves reviewing plans and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, pricing labor and materials, coordinating with vendors and subcontractors, supporting the sales and project management teams throughout the bidding process.
Key Responsibilities- Review architectural, mechanical, plumbing drawings and project manuals / bid qualification documents and specifications
- Perform and record detailed HVAC and plumbing quantity takeoffs
- Prepare accurate cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work based on specific quotes
- Solicit and evaluate project specific vendor and subcontractor pricing
- Analyze project risks, scope gaps, and value-engineering opportunities
- Prepare bid proposals, budgets, and supporting documentation
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and scope review meetings as required
- Track and manage multiple bids with varying deadlines
- Maintain historical cost data and estimating databases
- Assist with change order pricing and post-bid clarifications
- Ensure estimates comply with project specifications, codes, and company standards
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- 7-10+ years of experience in commercial plumbing estimating (experience level may vary)
- Strong understanding of plumbing and HVAC systems, and construction methods
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Trimble, FastPIPE, FastDUCT, Bluebeam, Plan Swift, or similar)
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
- Experience with commercial and/or industrial construction projects
- Knowledge of local building codes and regulations
- Familiarity with value engineering and design-build projects
- Field experience in HVAC or plumbing installation
- OSHA 30 certification
Physical Requirements
- Mandatory office-based employment with job site and vendor visits
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer
- Ability to lift plans or documents up to 25 lbs. to transport to and from meetings
