The General Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all field construction activities across one or multiple projects to ensure work is performed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with company quality standards. This role provides leadership and direction to superintendents, foremen, and craft employees while coordinating closely with project management, safety, engineering, and subcontractors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide overall leadership and direction for field operations across assigned projects.
- Supervise and mentor project superintendents, assistant superintendents, foremen, and craft personnel.
- Ensure all construction activities comply with project plans, specifications, and company standards.
- Develop and implement construction work plans, sequencing, and scheduling strategies.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, and material needs to support project schedules.
- Monitor daily field productivity and ensure efficient utilization of labor and equipment.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all job sites.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and incident investigations.
- Work with project managers and project engineers to maintain project schedules.
- Identify potential schedule risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure all work meets project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate field activities with subcontractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
- Maintain regular communication with project management regarding project progress and issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent field experience may substitute for formal education.
- Minimum 10–15 years of construction experience with at least 5 years in a supervisory leadership role.
- Experience managing large‑scale infrastructure or heavy civil projects preferred.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Extensive knowledge of construction methods, scheduling, and project controls.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to walk job sites, climb stairs and ladders, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work extended hours when required by project demands.
This position requires frequent presence on active construction sites where exposure to moving equipment, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions may occur. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times when on site.
