The Role and Expectations of Civil Superintendent I

The Civil Superintendent plays a critical leadership role in the successful execution of heavy civil construction projects. This position is responsible for overseeing daily field operations, ensuring work is completed safety, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project specifications and company quality standards.

The Superintendent provides leadership to field personnel, coordinates labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor activities, and serves as the primary point of contact on‑site. Success in this role requires a strong commitment to safety, production, quality workmanship, team development, and customer satisfaction.

This role is expected to foster a positive and productive work environment, develop field personnel, and promote the company’s values through professional leadership and accountability.

Responsibilities
  • Create schedules and work plans for the project weekly.
  • Lead the project site safety and quality culture.
  • Inspect site for safety and quality daily and fix any deficiencies.
  • Complete weekly planning with PM and jointly coordinate resources.
  • Track daily productivity against work plan and schedule.
  • Must be able to read and interpret construction documents and direct proper construction techniques ensuring a safe and quality build.
  • Be willing to learn new methods.
  • Complete daily reports.
  • Maintain positive customer relationships.
Required

Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in heavy civil construction, including earthwork, underground utilities and concrete.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • Positive attitude and temperament.
  • Must be capable of operating heavy equipment at least a rough grade ability level, as needed.
  • Trustworthy person with strength of character.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and motivational skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication.
  • Ability to use computer applications related to construction.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
