Position Summary

This position is accountable for providing field engineering line and grade layout project support. It includes planning, organizing, and directing the work of one or more field engineering crews to determine the precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction. The incumbent will typically work closely with the Project Manager, Project AGS, Superintendent, Laborers, and other skilled or semi‑skilled craft persons on the job site to ensure successful project completion and closeout.

The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, which center on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly founded on Integrity.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Research previous survey evidence, maps, physical evidence, construction documents, and other records to obtain data needed for layout.
  • Determine methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control.
  • Understand functions of the total Straton data collector and how to use level lasers.
  • Provide control lines for all TAS crews and lay out edge forms, columns, cast‑in‑place walls, footings, piers, anchor bolts, embeds, scaffolding, and shoring.
  • Provide elevation benchmarks, deck elevations, edge forms, columns, walls, sidewalks, and site work elevations.
  • Check plumpness of all columns and walls prior to concrete placement and plumbing of all columns and walls after concrete placement.
  • Verify deck elevation prior to concrete placement.
  • Keep accurate notes, records, sketches, and as‑built documents for locations and elevations of all embeds, anchor bolts, and elevated slabs.
  • Provide own transportation if assigned.
  • Coordinate findings with engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and other parties concerned with the project.
  • Study and utilize architectural, structural, civil, and shop drawings.
  • Keep, wear, and carry necessary tools to perform the job (not in vehicle or gang box).
  • Help other crews when job functions permit.
  • Mentor and train the eye man.
  • Maintain confidentiality by not disclosing confidential, proprietary, or trade secret information belonging to the Company.

Position Requirements

A minimum of three years of work experience is required. Prior hands‑on work experience in the concrete construction industry is preferred. The successful candidate must have exemplary problem‑solving abilities and technical skills, ability to apply basic algebra, geometry, and construction math concepts, excellent computer skills, and be knowledgeable with all Microsoft applications including Microsoft Office and Plan Grid. Excellent customer service and organizational skills are essential.

The incumbent must quickly learn technical aspects of the business, be an effective communicator, and interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Be a self‑starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision and independently identify work to be done.
  • Be flexible and adapt to sudden changes in work priorities.
  • Prioritize work generally and accommodate changes.
  • Have a high degree of attention to detail and perform tasks accurately and carefully.
  • Be flexible to travel between one or more job sites during the normal workday.
