This is a Senior Safety Coordinator position supporting utility power line construction projects (Transmission & Distribution, or T&D). The biggest focus is storm restoration work, meaning when hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, or other major weather events knock out power, this person helps ensure crews restore power safely.
Who is the ideal candidate?
The hiring manager would love someone who has:
- 5+ years of safety experience supporting electrical utility, transmission, or distribution projects
- 3+ years working directly with utility construction crews or outside line crews
- Former Lineman, Foreman, or field leader who moved into safety
- Strong knowledge of OSHA utility standards, especially OSHA
- Experience conducting field audits, safety observations, and incident investigations
Day-to-day responsibilities
Safety Oversight
- Walk job sites and observe crews working
- Make sure workers follow OSHA and utility safety rules
- Ensure safe grounding procedures are being used
- Monitor energized electrical work
- Conduct job safety briefings and coach employees
Storm Response
- Help prepare crews before major storm events
- Support emergency mobilization and deployment efforts
- Monitor crew fatigue and work/rest schedules
- Ensure Incident Command System (ICS) procedures are followed
- Act as the safety lead during power restoration efforts
Training
- Deliver safety training to employees
- Train crews on:
- OSHA
- Arc flash safety
- Grounding procedures
- Energized work practices
- Maintain First Aid, CPR, AED, and rescue programs
- Investigate injuries, accidents, and near misses
- Determine root causes
- Recommend corrective actions
- Coordinate medical response when needed
Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- OSHA
- NESC (National Electrical Safety Code)
- MUTCD (Traffic Control Standards)
- Client-specific utility requirements
- Maintain safety documentation and reporting
