Department SummaryThe University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) is part of the University of North Texas System, which also includes UNT Denton and the UNT Health Fort Worth. UNT Dallas, which is a standalone university in southern Dallas, invites applications for a full-time Instrumentation/Safety Specialist beginning November 2025. The successful candidate will be expected to manage the core teaching and research instrumentation for the Department of Natural Sciences, which offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Biology and Chemistry, and has plans to launch a Master’s degree in Biotechnology in Fall 2027.
The Department of Natural Sciences is well equipped for teaching and scholarship and will be moving into a state-of-the-art, 115,000 square foot Science Building (complete with a variety of brand-new analytical instrumentation including GC/MS, UV-Vis, FTIR, HPLC, and MP-AES) in Fall 2025.
Position OverviewIn this role, the individual acts as a liaison between the department and external instrumentation companies, coordinating service, maintenance, and equipment support. Will oversee the use of scientific instruments by students, faculty, and staff within teaching laboratories and departmental facilities, ensuring safe and effective operation. The individual will be responsible for training users on proper instrument usage and care, as well as performing an annual inventory assessment to maintain accurate records of departmental equipment.
The individual will provide technical support to faculty and staff engaged in instructional projects or small-scale research. Will ensure a safe working environment for faculty, staff, and students. The individual will teach one course or its equivalent per semester (either Chemistry, Physics, or science for non-majors course). Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support the department’s educational mission.
Master's Degree in related field and two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
Knowledge,Skills And Abilities
Some expertise in several if not all of the following instruments: benchtop NMR, GC/MS, UV-Vis, FTIR, HPLC, TGA/DSC, MP-AES, PCR, and Fluorescence Spectrometry. Diagnostics and repair experience with instrumentation. Strong PC background, including Microsoft Office. Ability to teach one course per semester.
Preferred QualificationsExperience at an academic institution working with a variety of departments. Prior teaching experience in Chemistry, Physics, or science for non-majors.
