Founded in 1997, Girlstart's mission is to increase girls' interest and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through innovative, nationally recognized informal STEM education programs. Girlstart's year‑round programs inspire girls to transform our world. These programs include after school, week‑long summer camps, community STEM programs, and an annual girls conference. Girlstart provides After School programs in multiple cities across Texas, Boston, MA, and the South Bay Area, CA.
Job DescriptionJoin Girlstart's efforts to educate and empower girls! Girlstart's Summer Counselors (called STEM CREW — Creative, Resourceful, Empowered Workforce) work directly with 4th-8th girls leading hands‑on science, technology, engineering, and math activities at weekly day camps. Enhance your leadership and teamwork skills, improve your presentation and communication skills, build your problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and decision‑making abilities all while being a positive and meaningful role model for girls!

Successful STEM CREW need to be comfortable traveling to and from their campsite, ready to work hard and most importantly, understand that Girlstart can't control everything going into a new environment so they need to be flexible. Additionally, Girlstart relies on this team of STEM CREW to be the face of our organization and we need to know and trust that the team can make the best decisions based on the situation at hand.
Responsibilities- Lead camp curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (previous STEM experience not required, curriculum and materials provided by Girlstart)
- Implement and run daily camp activities
- Learn and implement the Girlstart method within camp environment
- Modify activities as needed to accommodate any unique camp scenarios
- Be prepared to lead icebreakers, organize materials, practice/setup technology, etc.
- Facilitate classroom management techniques
- Act as a positive role model for girls
- HAVE FUN!!!
- Other duties as needed
- Teacher certification preferred or related experience in youth programming
- Positive, friendly, flexible and outgoing
- Self‑motivated with the ability to work as a team player and foster cooperative work
- Reliable, dependable, and timely
- Effective organization skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
- Excellent communication skills
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a commitment to the mission of Girlstart
- Experience working at summer camps and/or out of school time programming
- Knowledge of educational learning standards and best practices for classroom management
- Comfortable presenting to a group of youth
- Attend mandatory in‑person training weeks of May 18-22 & May 26-29 (hours to be determined)
- Work the complete duration of the camps (June 1-July 31; Mon‑Fri) ideal schedule approximately 8:00am-5:00pm (hours vary from camp to camp and exceptions can be discussed)
- Pass a background and fingerprint check, be or become First Aid/CPR certified, and obtain a Sexual Abuse Awareness certificate (Girlstart will provide additional information upon hire)
- Abide by partners requirements to work with youth
