Primer Instructional Assistant

Purpose

The ESD Primer Instructional Assistant is a passionate educator with knowledge of child development. As an effective member of the Lower School faculty, this individual is flexible and able to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues. He/she is committed to assisting the primer teacher in developing and modifying curriculum to meet the unique needs of every child. This teacher will be a lifelong learner who engages in professional development and collegial conversation leading to effective teaching and learning practices.

Functions
  • Promote the best interests of each child in the Lower School within the context of the Mission Statement and the Founding Tenets.
  • Assist lead teacher with the following: guided instructional groups (phonics, reading, writing, math), student documentation, technology implementations, lesson preparations, and other instructional support needs by the lead teacher.
  • Assist CAST teachers with instruction and student needs.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
    • Assist with Eagle Camp and Back to School events in the fall.
    • Assist with parent conferences on scheduled family conference days and convene or attend.
    • Collaborate with lead teacher on report card progress reports and narratives.
    • Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives.
    • Assist in providing regular curricular updates via Monday Matters school communication.
  • Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels.
    • Attend regularly scheduled meetings per direction of the HOLS.
  • Other duties and responsibilities.
    • Attend daily chapel.
    • Assist lead teacher with classroom preparation and attend all meetings during August in-service weeks.
    • Assist lead teacher in areas requested; perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Generally, 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing. Minimal temperature variations (regular exposure to outside temperatures).
  • Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
  • Generally, a hazard-free environment.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education, cognition or related field, preferred.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Patient, creative, optimistic, resilient, collaborative, and adaptable; takes initiative.
  • Knowledge of 21st Century learning principles, and techniques.
  • Ability to conduct small-group instructional lessons.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with various school constituents.
