Job Description
TITLE:
Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors/Master's/Doctorate degree and valid Texas Counselor's Certificate
Or licensed Professional Counselor Certificate preferred. Two years' experience in classroom teaching.
JOB GOAL:
Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services to school assigned. Use a planning period to define needs and priorities of population served. Provide a proactive, comprehensive guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth and development.

- Effectively plan and implement the school guidance and counseling program to meet identified needs.
- Teach the school developmental guidance curriculum.
- Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop academic, career, and personal plans.
- Provide counseling to individuals and small groups relative to their concerns, postsecondary advising, annual student and parent counseling, and financial aid guidance (if applicable).
- Collaborate with district staff to administrate implementation of testing, appraisal programs, and services.
- Use effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.
- Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board in the area of guidance and counseling.
- Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
- Maintain a positive, cooperative, and effective relationship with administrators and colleagues.
- Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
- Effectively communicate with students, parent and community.
- Acknowledge and respond to current and changing student and community needs.
- Review the effectiveness of the guidance program and implement changes as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective relationship with students, parents, and staff.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students.
- Take the initiative to augment needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment through professional growth opportunities.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Serve as a professional resource to the staff and community.
- Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of guidance and counseling to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
- Performs other duties as directed by the assigned supervisor.
Tools/Equipment Used:
Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture:
Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion:
Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
Lifting:
Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
Environment:
May work prolonged or irregular hour; occasional district wide and statewide travel.
Mental Demands:
Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
