Position Description (What You Will Do)

The Science Department at the Hockaday School encourages young women to understand the world through their own observations and guided inquiry. This position will teach chemistry classes to students in the Upper School. Opportunities to teach additional courses in the area of the person’s expertise/interest may also be available depending on departmental needs. The Science Department encourages students to understand the natural world through observation, experimentation, inquiry, and analysis.

Grounded in Hockaday’s Tenets of Science Excellence, science teachers design engaging laboratory and classroom experiences that help students develop curiosity, confidence, and independence as scientific thinkers. Through a curriculum that emphasizes hands‑on investigation, critical thinking, collaboration, and the application of scientific concepts, the department seeks to cultivate students who can ask thoughtful questions, evaluate evidence, solve problems, and make meaningful connections between science and the world around them.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 4 sections of Upper School Science; each section meets for 85 minutes three times per 7‑day rotation.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of Upper School students.
  • Develop and execute engaging lesson plans that foster critical and independent thinking.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students as much as possible.
  • Partner closely with colleagues to align curriculum, share insights, and design engaging lessons through team meetings, division meetings, and department meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Contribute to the life of the Upper School, including participating in all assigned duties and engaging in professional development.
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in chemistry or related field is preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to teach advanced (AP‑level) coursework as needed.
  • Teaching experience in chemistry in a high school setting.
  • Experience developing curriculum is preferred.
  • Experience and interest in developing innovative uses of technology in the classroom and comfort with its administrative use.
  • An interest in serving as a club sponsor and/or athletics coach.
  • A genuine appreciation of high school‑age children, solid knowledge of their developmental milestones, and understanding of appropriate classroom management techniques.
  • Commitment to being a supportive, respectful, and energetic colleague and mentor.
  • Ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required background and screening checks, including criminal and sex offender checks.
