Job Summary

UT Southwestern is seeking an experienced Power System Technician II to join our Thermal Energy Plant (N&S) team; to support the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of campus emergency power generation systems. We are looking for someone with strong hands‑on experience with generators, transfer switches, electrical controls, and diesel engine systems in a utility, industrial, healthcare, or campus environment.

As a Power System Technician II
, you will be responsible for ensuring reliable backup and peak‑shaving power across hospital and clinical facilities through the maintenance of diesel, natural gas, and gasoline‑powered generators ranging from 5kW to 3MW. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, load bank testing, emissions compliance, diagnostics and repairs, system commissioning, SCADA/PLC monitoring, and coordination with contractors and plant operations teams.

Work Location

Dallas Campus; assist other UTSW locations as needed.

Shift Requirement

8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; must be available to work 365 days, including weekends, holidays, and on‑call when needed. This position is considered essential and may require emergency response and extended shifts.

Education
  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, or vocational school.
Experience
  • 7 years experience in utilities or industrial trade, including stationary IC power generators, metering, relaying and control responsibilities, general maintenance, servicing, and repair of diesel and other gaseous IC engines and electrical systems related to light and heavy duty machinery and equipment.
  • OR 5 years experience and a two‑year technical electrical or mechanical trade school; or military training/apprenticeship.
Preferred
  • Experience in university and hospital campus environments.

    EGSA or similar certification, Class A and B UST license, EPA method 9 opacity certification.
Job Duties
  • Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts power generating and switching systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
  • Operates switchboards and synchronizes generators; adjusts frequency, voltage, and loads on 13.8 kV and 4.16 kV systems.
  • Performs, oversees contractors and coordinates weekly, monthly and annual preventive maintenance of generators, load bank testing, emissions testing, and repairs.
  • Diagnoses and performs necessary generator repairs (e.g., radiator hoses, block heaters, battery chargers, water pumps) and assists in major repairs; tests fuel, coolant, and oil.
  • Diagnoses electrical parts on engines and transfer switches; interprets schematic wiring.
  • Assists in development and implementation of the weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance schedule for all generators; provides fueling services after normal and emergency operation.
  • Installs and maintains all data acquisition and telemetry equipment.
  • Monitors equipment and maintains records of operational status, maintenance and repairs, including load banking and automatic transfer switch testing for Hospital Joint Commission and TCEQ/EPA compliance.
