Substation Physical Engineer – Jacobs
We are expanding our Transmission & Distribution operations in North America and looking for a Substation Physical and P&C Engineer in our Energy & Power Group to drive decarbonization and utility modernization.
About the roleAs a Substation Physical/P&C Engineer, you will work with regional and global T&D delivery teams to support utility and developer clients. Your responsibilities include interfacing with clients, developing design deliverables for utility upgrades (greenfield/brownfield, AIS/GIS substations, offshore wind facilities, developer interconnection facilities), and providing engineering oversight for major T&D network overhauls.
Responsibilities- Produce Substation design deliverables independently on time and within budget.
- Interpret client standards and protection philosophies, and give informed feedback.
- Guide and mentor team members across North America and globally.
- Support sales and proposal preparation for new contracts.
- Represent owner interests as an independent technical advisor during program management.
- Travel to client sites for field visits, walk‑downs, and construction support.
- Prepare project scoping, task orders, design reviews, and compliance verifications.
- Communicate findings through technical writing, presentations, and client meetings.
- Participate in professional societies and industry events to promote company services.
- Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering (Master’s counts as 1‑year experience).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States; able to obtain additional PE licenses if required.
- Minimum 8 years of Substation Physical/Protection & Controls design experience with a utility or consulting organization.
- Advanced knowledge of protection philosophies and relaying functions (line protection, transformer protection, breaker failure, capbank protection, communication‑based schemes, differential protection, etc.).
- Experience developing substation protection and control drawings: panel arrangements, single‑line/small‑line, three‑line, AC/DC schematics, wiring, and relay panel wiring.
- Experience developing substation physical drawings: general arrangement plan, conduit/trench plan, grounding plan, BOM, conduit schedules.
- Familiarity with grounding system design, lightning protection, and SCADA communication design.
- Ability to perform AC/DC station service calculations, voltage‑drop analysis, fiber cable sizing, and equipment vendor specification reviews.
- Proficiency with QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications.
- Experience with relay‑setting software such as acSELerator Quick Set.
- Experience with CADD platforms (Autodesk, Bentley).
- Ownership representative experience is a plus.
- Strong communication, technical writing, and presentation skills; collaborative team player.
