Job Description

The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for leading and performing standard and advanced geotechnical and construction materials laboratory testing in support of geotechnical and construction material testing projects, with a strong emphasis on TxDOT standards and ASTM procedures. This position ensures that laboratory testing, reporting, and operations comply with TxDOT, ASTM, AASHTO, and project-specific requirements.

The Laboratory Coordinator provides day-to-day technical leadership within the laboratory, oversees quality control and quality assurance activities, and serves as a technical resource for engineers, project managers, and field staff. The role includes mentoring junior technicians, coordinating laboratory workflow, and maintaining AASHTO and TxDOT laboratory qualification and accreditation requirements.
  • Perform and oversee all geotechnical and construction materials laboratory testing in accordance with TxDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO standards
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with TxDOT laboratory qualification program and AASHTO accreditation program
  • Review laboratory test data, calculations, and reports for accuracy, completeness, and conformance with TxDOT procedures
  • Maintain and monitor QA/QC programs including internal audits, corrective actions, and documentation
  • Coordinate laboratory schedules and priorities to meet project deadlines and reporting requirements
  • Train, mentor, and supervise junior laboratory technicians on proper testing methods, safety procedures, and documentation standards
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including calibration tracking and documentation and coordination of repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of samples
  • Assist engineers and project managers by:
    • Interpreting test results and providing final tests reports
    • Providing technical input related to materials behavior and compliance
  • Support AASHTO and TxDOT audits, inspections, and accreditation reviews, including preparation of records and corrective responses
  • Communicate effectively with field personnel, engineers, and TxDOT representatives regarding testing requirements and results
