LocationDallas District Headquarters – 4777 East Highway 80, Mesquite, TX 75150. Other locations: UST‑Texas‑Dallas.
Position OverviewTxDOT’s Dallas District Roadway Design and Hydrology & Hydraulics sections located in Mesquite, TX are seeking a Transportation Engineer I or II. The selected candidate(s) will manage and perform design work on complex projects within the district’s portfolio, including transportation engineering design, in‑house mobility project management, consultant contract management for hydrology & hydraulics projects, and participation in TxDOT’s Bridge Programs. The role requires frequent contact with government officials, private entities, Area Offices, various district departments, and other offices.
Responsibilities- Perform highly advanced and complex engineering design work.
- Review and process plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Monitor consultants’ progress and work quality; verify invoices and related documents.
- Represent the district at technical meetings and public hearings.
- Make presentations and represent TxDOT to stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related science; a higher degree is accepted by TX PELS.
- Transportation Engineer I: 4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience; graduate‑level education may substitute for experience at a one‑to‑one ratio.
- Transportation Engineer II: 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience; graduate‑level education may substitute for experience at a one‑to‑one ratio.
- Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE). If currently licensed in another state but not in Texas, the candidate must obtain a Texas PE license within six months of hire and agree to a signed statement of compliance.
- Effective communication skills.
- Hydrologic and hydraulic engineering principles, practices, and methods.
- Preparation, review, processing, and compliance of plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Construction engineering policies and procedures.
- Logical reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Clear, concise, organized presentation of ideas.
- Application of engineering principles, practices, and methods to job responsibilities.
- Sedentary work; lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files or small tools.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This role is subject to random drug testing. Notice that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
