Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer at KAI is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and analysis of engineering systems, with a specific focus on HVAC engineering. This role involves performing independent design evaluations, project management, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. The Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with various departments and external partners to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions for building systems.

Essential Functions
  • Perform engineering design evaluations and lead project design specific to HVAC systems, including both decentralized and centralized systems.
  • Conduct independent design of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Analyze existing HVAC systems in buildings and recommend design improvements to enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Prepare engineering analyses for projects, including preliminary design, budget analysis, calculations, life cycle costs, and equipment selection.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings and layouts using Revit and/or AutoCAD.
  • Develop technical construction specifications for project documentation.
  • Review designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, engineering standards, and best practices.
  • Perform field observations as part of the construction quality assurance process.
  • Conduct site visits to verify design implementations and identify potential issues.
  • Assist with project scheduling and work assignment to team members as needed.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and within-budget project delivery.
  • Deliver technical presentations to internal teams and external clients as required during the design process.
  • Communicate complex engineering concepts effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned to support the engineering team and project requirements.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on HVAC design and systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is required.
  • Thorough understanding of HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, exhaust equipment, and terminal units.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local building codes, safety laws, and standards (e.g., NFPA, ASHRAE).

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in using engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, 3D CAD, and BIM systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to generate creative solutions, translate concepts into detailed designs, and apply design principles with precision.
  • Proficiency in performing building load, pressure loss, ventilation, and fuel gas calculations.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of engineering design and documentation.
  • Ability to identify and avoid potential errors that could impact project outcomes.
  • Effective communication skills for presenting information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen, interpret complex information and convey technical concepts to various audiences.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities and can take on roles of authority when necessary.
