Electro-Optical Engineering Technician

Reporting To:
Senior Director, Advanced Technology

Location:

Dallas, TX. (Allen / Plano area)

General Function:

The Engineering Technician II is responsible for hands-on electrical and electro-optical testing, troubleshooting, assembly, characterization, and validation of advanced products supporting research, product development, and low-volume manufacturing. This role works closely with electrical, optical, mechanical, manufacturing, and systems engineers and serves as a hands-on engineering resource for building prototypes, setting up experiments, executing tests, diagnosing hardware problems, and documenting results.

Applications include AR/VR systems, HUDs/HMDs, imaging devices, weapon sights, silicon photonics, optical assemblies, and advanced microdisplay products operating in demanding military and commercial environments.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build, assemble, modify, and rework prototype electronic and electro-optical hardware, including fine-pitch PCBs, optical assemblies, sensors, interconnects, cabling, and complete system prototypes.
  • Set up and perform electrical, optical, electro-optical, and functional tests from engineering procedures, test plans, schematics, and verbal engineering direction.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and electro-optical assemblies methodically, isolate faults to the appropriate component or subsystem, determine root cause, and work with engineers to identify corrective actions.
  • Perform precision soldering, component replacement, wire preparation, connector installation, cable assembly, and prototype rework, including work with small components and fine-pitch connections.
  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot optical and electro-optical systems, including optical alignment, fiber or optical coupling, focus adjustment, calibration, detector/emitter characterization, and system-level performance testing.
  • Work with engineers to establish test setups, fixtures, instrumentation, procedures, and data-collection methods for new experiments and product evaluations.
  • Characterize prototype hardware by collecting electrical and optical performance data, comparing results with requirements, identifying trends or anomalies, and communicating findings to engineering.
  • Maintain clear and accurate test records, build records, troubleshooting notes, data files, engineering logs, and other documentation needed to reproduce and understand results.
  • Support engineering changes by implementing component substitutions, wiring changes, PCB modifications, and other prototype updates under engineering direction.
  • Assist with simple PCB layout, schematic capture, cable drawings, wiring diagrams, or other basic engineering drawings when needed.
  • Help develop and improve laboratory fixtures, test equipment, tooling, and repeatable test methods.
  • Follow established ESD, clean-room, optical handling, laboratory safety, and configuration-control practices.

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • Kopin is a defense contractor and is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position.
  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Electro-Optics/Optics, related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience supporting engineering development, laboratory testing, electronics assembly, electro-optical systems, or a related technical field.
  • Fundamental understanding of DC and AC circuits and practical electrical concepts, including voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, continuity, grounding, and power supplies.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical hardware using a logical, methodical approach and to identify probable root causes rather than simply replacing assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, PCB layouts, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and other engineering documentation.
  • Demonstrated hands-on ability with soldering, electronic rework, wire preparation, connector assembly, and cable construction.
  • Ability to perform precise hands-on work with small components and assemblies, frequently using a microscope or other magnification.
  • Ability to document test results and troubleshooting activities clearly and communicate technical observations to engineers.

Preferred

Job Requirements:

  • Experience testing, assembling, aligning, or troubleshooting electro-optical systems.
  • Experience with microdisplays, imaging systems, optical sensors, fiber optics, optical interconnects, lasers, LEDs, photodiodes, or other photonic devices.
  • Experience performing optical alignment, coupling, focus adjustment, calibration, or optical characterization.
  • Experience with data acquisition, automated testing, scripting, or basic programming used to collect and analyze test data.
  • Familiarity with CAD viewing software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience…
