About the Role:The Civil Structural Design Manager acts as the senior authority for the coordination, integration, and management of all civil and structural activities during the design phase of H&MV projects. The role ensures civil and structural designs are fully aligned with electrical systems, construction strategy, programme, budget, and regulatory requirements from concept through to energisation and handover.
The Civil Structural Design Manager focuses on coordinating all civil, structural, and architectural scope across complex infrastructure projects such as high-voltage substations for large data centre and renewable projects (battery energy storage systems (BESS)).
Purpose of the RoleTo ensure that all Civil Structural elements are clearly defined, technically aligned, and seamlessly coordinated from concept design through to construction, energisation, and handover.
Key Responsibilities 1. CSA Design Coordination- Serve as the senior point of contact for all civil, structural, and architectural interfaces within H&Mv projects during the design phase.
- Coordinate civil, structural, and architectural design across multiple packages and disciplines.
- Review consultant drawings, reports, and calculations for compliance with standards and project requirements.
- Lead CS consultant meetings and multidisciplinary coordination sessions.
- Maintain ultimate responsibility for management, performance, and output of CS design consultants.
- Manage and respond to design queries, RFIs, clash issues, and technical clarifications.
- Proactively identify CS interface and constructability risks, particularly for AIS and GIS substations.
- Lead resolution of interface-related issues without compromising safety, quality, or performance.
- Manage and record CS design risks and opportunities within the Project Risk & Opportunity Register.
- Monitor design programme and engage with planners and design teams to mitigate slippage.
- Maintain the CS interface register for substations, BESS projects, utilities, and below-ground works.
- Identify and resolve design, construction, and vendor interfaces (e.g., transformer plinths, cable trenches, crane hard standing, fire walls, building interfaces).
- Lead interface discussions with electrical, mechanical, fire, utilities, and commissioning teams.
- Track all CS deliverables against the project programme.
- Ensure timely delivery of drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports.
- Flag design risks early and coordinate close-outs to support key milestones (planning submissions, equipment procurement, civils start, energisation).
- Work closely with project managers, engineering leads, procurement teams, and site teams.
- Drive coordination with external architects, civil/structural consultants, geotechnical engineers, and local authorities.
- Support tender queries, technical evaluations, and incoming vendor documentation.
