We are seeking an experienced, hands‑on COO with deep law‑firm accounting expertise to lead the firm’s financial operations and administrative infrastructure.
This is a working leadership role for someone who understands legal billing, trust compliance, partner compensation environments, and the day‑to‑day realities of running a professional services firm.
Position SummaryThe COO has primary responsibility for the firm’s accounting, financial reporting, cash management, and operational support functions. The role partners closely with the Management Committee and office leaders while directly overseeing the firm’s financial accuracy, compliance, and reporting discipline.
Key Responsibilities Core Accounting & Trust Management- Lead the accounting department, including policies, procedures, systems, and internal controls
- Oversee operating and IOLTA trust account activity, reconciliations, and compliance
- Supervise client settlements and disbursements
- Direct accounts payable, approvals, firm credit cards, and vendor issue resolution
- Execute monthly and year‑end close processes, journal entries, and reconciliations
- Maintain the balance sheet, including fixed assets
- Monitor daily cash position
- Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts
- Ensure adequate liquidity for payroll, taxes, and partner distributions
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports
- Track profitability, productivity, and key performance metrics
- Support budgeting and forecasting
- Serve as financial liaison for the firm’s time & billing system, including reporting accuracy and quality control
- Manage employee benefits programs, renewals, and open enrollment
- Oversee retirement/401(k) reporting and coordination with providers
- Ensure compliance with insurance renewals, tax filings, banking requirements, and regulatory obligations
- Provide financial and administrative support across several locations
- Recommend and implement process improvements and efficiencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum 7+ years of accounting leadership experience within a law firm (required)
- Strong working knowledge of trust accounting and legal billing environments
- Deep understanding of GAAP and internal control practices
- Experience with legal practice management/accounting systems (Centerbase strongly preferred)
- Advanced Excel proficiency
- This is a hands‑on role
