What is the opportunity?
The Credit Risk Review Department (CRR) is the 3rd line of defense for the bank, operating independently of credit granting, adjudication, operations, and risk‑management functions performed by the 1st and 2nd lines. CRR’s mandate is to assess and opine on the overall credit risk and effectiveness of credit‑risk management processes. It advises lending units and credit administration on process improvements, regulatory issues, credit policy and underwriting guidelines, identifies and recommends solutions to problems in credit risk assessment and loan exposure administration, and monitors the quality of retail and commercial credits.
CRR evaluates credit policies and processes, ensures adequate credit controls, monitors policy adherence, validates exceptions, and may lead credit review examinations, prepare reports, and conduct meetings with bank departments.
- Scope, lead and manage examinations of various credit portfolios and credit processes.
- Perform risk‑based independent reviews of CNB loan portfolios, including quality assurance documentation and underwriting reviews, to identify potential problems and positive elements regarding credit risk assessment and loan exposure administration.
- Determine accuracy of assigned internal credit risk ratings, identify non‑compliance with CNB policies, loan weaknesses, violations of laws and regulations, and inadequate credit/collateral documentation.
- Recommend and effect process changes related to credit‑risk management activities, regulatory statutes, and credit policy.
- Interpret and evaluate Bank Credit Policy; ensure proper credit controls are in place to manage credit risk; monitor policy adherence and validate exceptions.
- Act as an internal advisor/partner to bank line units regarding loan and credit matters and provide guidance for further development.
- Maintain awareness of current regulatory and industry trends that impact the bank’s credit areas.
- Promote teamwork within the department to ensure knowledge and experience sharing.
- Prepare departmental and portfolio reporting as requested by management.
- Comply fully with all bank operational and credit policies and procedures and all regulatory requirements (e.g., BSA, KYC, CRE, Fair Lending Practices, Code of Conduct).
- Complete all required training and special projects as requested.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years of credit examination experience as a commercial lender, regulator, or credit review officer.
- Minimum 5 years of MS Office experience.
- Completion of a formal credit training program at a commercial bank is a plus.
- Previous experience leading teams of examiners is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of various middle‑market credits.
- Thorough understanding of corporate, syndicated, leveraged loans, high‑net‑worth, private‑client lending, and retail loan products.
- Knowledge of Probability of Default (PD) and Loss Given Default (LGD) systems.
- Ability to lead a team of examiners in credit risk review activities and related projects.
- Strong client‑focused, consultative work environment skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and project‑management skills.
- Proficiency with personal computers and software packages, including Excel and Word.
Starting base salary: $99,000 - $176,000 per year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. This job is eligible for bonus and/or commissions.
