Tax Experienced Senior, Core Tax Services Job Summary

A Tax Experienced Senior in Core Tax Services uses research skills, applies tax foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gathers client information for filing, participates in tax planning, recognizes and communicates potential risks, prepares tax accrual work papers and works with tax software applications to complete tax returns for review. The Senior is the main client contact for general questions and may supervise and review the work of Core Tax Services Associates.

Job Duties Tax Compliance
  • Ensures clients comply with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures compliance with firm policies.
  • Manages projects by planning tax processes and procedures with quality.
  • Answers preparer questions and coordinates engagement from onset.
  • Conducts detailed reviews on returns and appropriate review notes; raises potential tax issues.
  • Meets internal deadlines for timely delivery of service.
  • Identifies book‑to‑tax differences.
  • Develops budgets, monitors budget vs. actual, schedules resources, identifies out‑of‑scope activity.
Research
  • Identifies when research is needed, frames issues, and reports analysis.
  • Applies firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
  • Applies firm policies, standards, and BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
  • Prepares provision work papers and discusses with team members.
  • Identifies and discusses uncertain positions.
  • Reviews and prepares footnote disclosures in compliance with ASC 740.
  • Utilizes and manages STS.
  • Drafts tax provision memorandums.
  • Communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews.
Tax Consulting
  • Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits.
  • Identifies consulting opportunities to reduce client’s tax liability.
  • Provides support for client consulting projects.
  • Gathers relevant information for controversy work efficiently.
  • Documents significant tax positions with memorandums and archives in Go File Room .
  • Introduces new ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
  • Prepares studies of tax implications and alternative actions.
Other Duties
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May supervise day‑to‑day assignments of Core Tax Services Associates.
  • Provides verbal and written performance feedback.
  • Acts as mentor to Core Tax Services Associates.
Qualifications, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or statistics OR a bachelor’s degree in another focus area with CPA certification (or authorized to test) required.
  • Master’s in accountancy or taxation preferred.
Experience
  • Three or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.
License/Certifications
  • CPA certification, attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent preferred.
  • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
Software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software.
Language
  • N/A

Salary

Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

  • Colorado: $85,500 - $104,500
  • Illinois: $90,000 - $108,000
  • Maryland: $98,000 - $110,000
  • Massachusetts: $102,000 - $119,000
  • Minnesota: $80,000 - $95,000
  • New Jersey: $88,000 - $125,000
  • Ohio: $85,000 - $115,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $115,000 - $130,000
  • Washington: $87,400 - $120,000
  • Washington DC: $105,000 - $117,000
