Law Firm Controller Role

The Law Firm Controller will serve as the senior financial leader responsible for overseeing the firm's day-to-day accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to firm leadership, this individual will manage all back‑office financial functions, including accounting, trust accounting, payroll, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and compliance.

Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee all accounting and financial operations of the firm
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage month‑end and year‑end closing processes
  • Develop financial reports and dashboards for firm leadership
  • Monitor firm profitability, cash flow, and financial performance metrics
  • Present financial results and recommendations to firm partners and leadership
Accounting Operations
  • Direct all general ledger activities and account reconciliations
  • Ensure accuracy of financial records and accounting processes
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections, and expense management
  • Maintain internal controls and accounting policies
  • Coordinate external audits, tax preparation, and financial reviews
Trust Accounting & Compliance
  • Manage attorney trust accounts (IOLTA) and ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Maintain adherence to legal industry accounting requirements and ethical standards
  • Ensure proper handling of client funds and trust reconciliations
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations
Payroll & Benefits Administration
  • Oversee payroll processing and related tax compliance
  • Ensure timely and accurate payroll reporting
Strategic Financial Planning
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Assist firm leadership with long-term financial planning and growth initiatives
  • Provide financial analysis to support business decisions and operational improvements
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, and financial controls
Leadership & Team Collaboration
  • Partner closely with attorneys, firm partners, and administrative leadership
  • Mentor and support accounting and administrative staff as needed
  • Serve as a trusted advisor regarding financial and operational matters
  • Contribute to a collaborative and team‑oriented work environment
Law Firm Controller Background Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls
  • Experience overseeing payroll, accounting operations, and cash management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • Prior law firm, legal services, consulting, public accounting, or professional services experience
  • Experience managing trust accounting and IOLTA compliance
  • Experience serving as Controller, Director of Finance, Assistant CFO, or CFO
  • Familiarity with law firm accounting software and legal billing systems
