CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER - Mechanical & Plumbing Contractor OVERVIEW

Staxmatic is a fast-growing mechanical and plumbing contractor specializing in large-scale commercial construction projects for healthcare, municipal, educational, high-rise, and other large-scale construction developments. We have built a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality projects through a culture rooted in teamwork, accountability, and craftsmanship. At Staxmatic, we invest in our people, offering competitive pay, strong benefits, and real career growth.

POSITION SUMMARY

Staxmatic is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee all financial aspects of its operations. The CFO is a senior executive responsible for the financial health and strategic direction of all finance and accounting functions. Reporting directly to the President, the CFO serves as a key business partner across operations, field leadership, and ownership. This role demands deep fluency in project-based accounting — particularly WIP (work-in-progress) reporting, job costing, bonding capacity, and the cash flow dynamics inherent to the construction and infrastructure trades.

This is a hands-on operating role, not a pure strategic one. The right candidate combines technical accounting rigor with a contractor's intuition for margin and cash.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage the Company’s finance function (financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable)
  • Oversee the monthly close process and produce accurate, timely financial statements
  • Review pay applications, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • WIP schedules are properly maintained and are properly tracking overbilling/under billing, reviewing with project management on a regular basis
  • Present monthly financial packages to ownership, including job cost variance analysis and project profitability reviews
  • Lead annual audit efforts with external CPAs
Job Costing & Operations Finance
  • Partner with our Executive Team to track labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs against estimates
  • Identify and flag cost overruns early; support corrective action conversations
  • Analyze bid-to-actual variances to improve estimating accuracy over time
  • Maintain labor burden rates, overhead allocation models, and equipment cost tracking
  • Ensure that all job costs (labor, equipment, materials) are being properly assigned and/or allocated to the appropriate job
Bonding & Surety
  • Serve as the primary relationship owner with the surety broker and bonding company
  • Prepare and submit bonding pre-qualification packages; manage the annual bonding renewal process
  • Monitor backlog, working capital, and net worth in the context of bonding capacity
  • Maintain documentation required for individual bond requests on public and large private projects
Budgeting & Planning
  • Work with our Executive Team on strategic planning and provide guidance for our annual budgeting process in collaboration with ownership and department heads
  • Ensure rolling forecasts and scenario models are developed to support business decisions
  • Track and report on overhead spending versus budget; manage G&A cost discipline
  • Manage and develop accounting staff (Controller, AP/AR/project accounting)
  • Own the company's accounting and ERP systems (Quick Books desktop and Procore)
  • Drive process improvements and workflow automation to scale with revenue growth
QUALIFICATIONS Required
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior finance role
  • Demonstrated experience in the construction, mechanical contracting or related trade contracting industry
  • Deep knowledge of percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting and WIP reporting under ASC 606
  • Hands-on experience with construction ERP/accounting software (Procore, Vista/Viewpoint, Foundation, Sage, or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of job costing, labor burden, overhead allocation, and project cash flow
  • Experience managing surety bonding relationships and preparing pre-qualification packages
  • Proven ability to manage banking relationships and maintain compliance with credit facility covenants
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
Preferred
  • Experience in a company operating across multiple states or jurisdictions
  • Familiarity with certified payroll, prevailing wage, and Davis-Bacon compliance
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Annual salary of $250,000
